Animation of a Philips Manikin book within the museum collection at Derby Silk Mill.
Philips were a publisher of maps; this book was their first publication of the male anatomical body.
The Manikin uses paper enginering techniques, such as gatefolds that were originally used in cartographic publications, and applied these folds to unfolding the human body. The effect is that of dissecting the body and was used as a learning tool by students of medicine.
We are currently carrying out a maker residency at Derby Silk Mill that has involved researching their collection as a starting point for making. These short films form part of our research and development process investigating the mechanics of movement.
